Short answer: the hinge sets the weight limit, and the building sets most of the rest. In the FritsJurgens 2022 catalogue the heaviest systems carry doors of up to 500 kg, depending on door width, and the company says a door on its hinges can be any height. In practice a large pivot door is limited by its weight, how flat the leaf stays, what the floor and head can carry, wind, and how the door gets to site. We make pivot doors up to 4,000 mm wide and 8,000 mm tall.
How much weight can a pivot hinge carry?
Every pivot hinge is rated for a range of door weights. These are the figures from the FritsJurgens 2022 catalogue for the systems we fit:
| System | Door weight | How it swings |
|---|---|---|
| System M | 20–209 kg | 180° double acting or 90° single acting |
| System M+ | 20–500 kg* | 180° double acting or 90° single acting |
| System 3 | 20–350 kg* | 360°, turns to the next stop |
| System One | 0–500 kg* | 360°, free swing |
*Depending on door width.
Width matters because the further the leaf’s weight sits from the pivot, the more load goes into the hinge and the top pivot. Two doors of the same weight can need different hinges if one is much wider.
To find the weight, multiply the leaf area by the weight per square metre of that exact construction: the face, the core and the inside face. Do not borrow the figure from another door. A 30 mm carved face, like the one on our Contour door, weighs far more than the 4 mm sheet face on Grain Band. Ask your manufacturer for the leaf weight and the hinge they will use, and check both on the drawing before you approve it.
How do you keep a tall leaf flat?
A tall leaf can bow or twist, and a pivot door shows it more than most, because the gaps along its edges are narrow and even. The risk grows with height, with a slim leaf, and with sun on a dark face while the inside stays cool. Ask how the leaf is built to stay flat over its full height, and agree what flatness is acceptable before production, in writing.
What do the floor and the head have to carry?
On FritsJurgens hinges the mechanism sits inside the door. Only a plate is fixed to the floor, with pins that go 8 mm into it, and a top pivot is fixed at the head. That makes the floor simpler than it looks, but three things still matter:
- The plate needs a solid, finished floor under it, at its final level.
- The head must be strong enough to hold the top pivot, which keeps the leaf upright. On a tall opening this is often a steel or concrete lintel, not a plasterboard ceiling.
- The two pivots must line up exactly, one above the other. If the opening is out of plumb, the door will drift open or closed.
What does wind do to a large pivot door?
A large leaf catches wind like a sail. Gusts can swing it hard against its stops or stop it from closing. FritsJurgens’ own technical documentation advises choosing the next heavier System 3 variant where there are pressure differences in a building. For an exposed entrance, plan a canopy or a recess, and tell your manufacturer which way the door faces.
Will a large pivot door fit in a shipping container?
Big doors are usually limited by the container before the factory. A 40 ft high-cube container is about 12.03 m long inside, and its door opening is about 2.34 m wide and 2.58 m high. A crated leaf that is under about 2.3 m in one direction and under 12 m in the other can go in standing on its edge. A leaf that is wider and taller than the door opening, such as 3 × 6 m, needs an open-top container or a flat rack, which cost more and need more careful handling. Check the route to site too: a large leaf may need a crane, a clear path and several installers.
How big are the pivot doors we make?
- Pivot doors: up to 4,000 × 8,000 mm, on FritsJurgens pivot hinges.
- Double doors: up to 3,000 × 6,000 mm.
Send us the opening, and ask us for the leaf weight, the hinge and how the door will travel before you approve the drawing. Our guide on what to send a door manufacturer covers the rest.

Quick answers
What is the maximum weight for a pivot door hinge?
It depends on the hinge. In the FritsJurgens 2022 catalogue, System M takes doors of 20–209 kg, and System M+ and System One go up to 500 kg, depending on door width. A heavier door needs a heavier hinge class, so the leaf weight should be worked out before the hinge is chosen.
How tall can a pivot door be?
FritsJurgens says a door on its hinges can be any height. The practical limits are the leaf's weight, how flat it stays, what the floor and head can carry, wind and transport. We make pivot doors up to 4,000 mm wide and 8,000 mm tall.
Will a very large pivot door fit in a shipping container?
The door opening of a 40 ft high-cube container is about 2.34 m wide and 2.58 m high. If a crated leaf is bigger than that in both width and height, it cannot go in standing up or lying flat, and needs an open-top container or a flat rack.
