Short answer: wind is the main reason a pivot door misbehaves outdoors. The leaf is large and turns about a point inside its width, so a gust can push it open, slam it, or stop it from closing. Most problems are avoided at design stage: open the door inward, shelter it with a recess or canopy, choose a hinge with closing control and enough weight capacity, and let the lock, not the hinge, hold the door shut.
Why is a pivot door more affected by wind than a hinged door?
A pivot door is often wider and taller than a hinged door, so it presents a larger area to the wind. It also turns on a pivot set in from the edge, so wind pressing on the wider part of the leaf turns the whole door. A hold-open or closing force that is plenty indoors can be overcome by a gust on an exposed façade. A building with open windows, a lift shaft or air-conditioning can also create a pressure difference across the door, which pushes it the same way.
Which pivot hinge features help in wind?
We fit FritsJurgens pivot hinges. Their features differ by system:
| System | Self-closing | Closing control | Hold positions |
|---|---|---|---|
| System M | Yes | Damper Control | 0° and ±90° |
| System M+ | Yes | Damper Control, Speed Control, Latch Control | Soft hold at ±90° |
| System 3 | Yes, from 45° toward the next 90° | No speed or latch control | Every 90° |
| System One | No, free swing | None; needs an external stop | None |
Damping slows the leaf as it opens or closes, so a gust is less likely to slam it. Speed control sets the closing speed. Even so, FritsJurgens notes that the M+ behaviour can be influenced by wind pressure, temperature and the resistance of seals and locks. For particularly high doors or pressure differences in a building, its technical documentation says to select the next heavier System 3 variant so the door still closes.
Which way should an exterior pivot door open?
Inward. FritsJurgens recommends inward-opening exterior pivot doors, and a double rebate on exposed façades. It also notes that a 90° hold position can be exceeded by wind pressure if the door opens outward. A door that opens outward into the wind is the hardest case: the wind holds it open, then slams it.
Where should you not use a pivot door?
Think twice, or plan extra protection, where:
- The entrance faces the prevailing wind with no recess, canopy or porch.
- The site is high, coastal or in a cyclone region.
- The door has to stand open for long periods in a draughty building.
- Children or older people will use it unsupervised and the door is very heavy.
In those places a recessed entrance, a lobby, an inward-opening leaf or a double door may serve better.
Which wind-load tests apply to doors?
| Market | Test or classification | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| United States | ASTM E330 | Structural performance under uniform static air pressure; applies to the specimen tested |
| Europe | EN 12210 | Wind classes 1 to 5 (test pressure P1 400 to 2,000 Pa), or Exxxx above class 5; deflection classes A, B, C |
| Australia | AS 4055 with AS 2047 | AS 4055 gives a house’s wind class (N1 to N6, C1 to C4); AS 2047 sets test pressures for windows and glazed doors |
Ask which test, if any, the door was put through, at what pressure, and at what size. A result applies to the door as tested. Tell your manufacturer which way the door faces, how exposed it is and the site’s wind class, so the hinge, lock and seals are chosen for it.

Quick answers
Can wind blow a pivot door open or shut?
Yes. A large leaf catches wind, and wind pressure can overcome a hinge's hold-open position or stop the door from closing. FritsJurgens notes that the 90° hold can be exceeded by wind pressure if the door opens outward.
Should an exterior pivot door open inward or outward?
FritsJurgens recommends that exterior pivot doors open inward, and a double rebate on exposed façades. Inward opening keeps the leaf out of the wind on the outside and lets it close against the frame.
Which pivot hinge is best for a windy entrance?
Pick a hinge with closing control, such as damping and speed control, rated for the leaf weight with a margin. FritsJurgens advises choosing the next heavier System 3 variant for very high doors or where there are pressure differences in the building.
